The Sails, retro days in Brunswick Heads
Sometimes you don’t have to wander too far to feel like you’ve had a little holiday.
Found just 15min drive from Byron the sweet river side town of Brunswick Heads is a great place to do it.
Our staycation begins at ‘The Sails Motel’. Built in 1962 the retro charm of this motel still rings true.
Theres a great happy go lucky vibe at The Sails. 22 rooms (including larger family style suites), pool, bar and function space all walking distance to both town and the beach.
The food offering in Brunswick Heads is spot on – we mention a lot in the pages of our Byron guide yet if you only have a weekend to spare, here are some great ones to taste;
Start the day at Jones and Co. Great coffee, awesome staff and a little nook out back with kids toys and books, what’s even better is that its directly opposite the Motel.
For breakfast, catch the sun at Ethel cafe. They have a range of quick eats. I have to vouch for the Ruben though – it was my go to during my pregnancy too!
For lunch we grab takeaway burgers, sweet potato fries and milkshakes from Old Maids diner, you can together on a booth seating there to take away and sit by the pool at The Sails.
Days are spent at Torakina or ‘Tori’ to the locals, where you can pop up an umbrella in the sand and enjoy the still water – perfect for kids. A walk around the shops like Sunshine Trader, ReSould and Clem’s Cargo is a nice way to pass the time.
Evenings are spent riding bikes or just taking a slow walk, spotting dolphins along the seawall, where the winter sunsets are just the best!
To dine, you can’t go past La Casita, Mexican. A great outdoor/indoor space with a lively scene. Great salty margaritas and tasty tacos, grab a table early as not to miss out – its a popular little spot for good reason.
If your baby free. Fleet’s fine dining experience will leave you breathless (remember to book well in advance). Make it a date and catch a show at The Brunswick Picture House.
Something tells me your going to love the village vibe here in Bruns, its a lovely return to the slower pace which I think we all enjoy every now and then especially with the little ones in tow.
