The Coal Shack, Scarborough NSW

A stylish seaside getaway just an hour from Sydney city

The idea of a “shack” brings to mind an air of rustic living, yet it is quite the contray at this chic coastal retreat.

Minimalist yet homely is how I would best describe this lovely space. Sunlit, open areas with every mod con you would ever require.

Creature comforts include the cosy wood fire, Pony Rider bedroom accessories and an outdoor fire pit!

I must admit my favourite little luxury was the heated floor and towel rack (hence having 3 baths in over our 2 nights stay).

This picturesque stretch of the coastline is well known to surfers and fisherman, it’s now gaining a reputation for great cafes like;

Earth Walker cafe in Coledale (I can personally vouch for the Earth bowl with halloumi cheese).

In nearby Thirroul you’ll find;

Fin Box Cafe
Bread & Espresso
Honest Dons
Buck Hamblin

For basic pub grub but great views you have the Scarborough Hotel (walking distance from the shack) or Headland Hotel towards Austinmer. For entertaining at home we stocked up on groceries from the local IGA, there is also a local farmers market on the weekends or plenty of takeaway options too.

Locals tip: for an early dinner of fish n chips stop at Bergie’s, grab a cold drink and and watch the sunset over the beach.
