An Ayurvedic stay – Sri Lanka, India
On the beach front of Weligama in southern Sri Lanka, Barberyn Beach Resort lies disguised amongst a tranquil rain forest, established around Ayurvedic principles.
I had been traveling for 3 weeks around Sri Lanka and had another month in India to follow. To ensure I was in optimum health for the rest of my holiday I intended to visit an authentic Ayurvedic healing space. I was fortunate enough to be put in touch with this unique resort and jumped at the opportunity to spend a day being pampered the Barberyn way.
On arrival an Ayurvedic doctor customises individual treatment plans including dietary, exercise and relaxation advice for the duration of your stay. Authentic Ayurvedic dishes and herbal medicinal teas are lovingly prepared for breakfast, lunch and dinner – each with comprehensive information on ingredients, nutritional medicinal benefits and the effects they have on your dosha. My treatment included a full body oil massage followed by 10 minutes of relaxation overlooking the serene Ayurvedic herb garden where trained nurses prepare medicinal salves and tinctures. A herbal exfoliant shower and bath to follow leaves you feeling fresh and enlivened.
Barberyn offers daily sunrise and sunset yoga classes in an outdoor bungalow overlooking the perfectly manicured gardens and the Indian Ocean beyond. Between downward dogs, exceptional treatments and nourishing meals time can be spent beside the pool sipping freshly squeezed juices or reading a novel in a wooden day bed enjoying the sea breeze.
Although it was only a short visit I walked away feeling revitalized, refreshed and wishing I had more time in Sri Lanka for the whole experience. I look forward to returning to your charming healing space.
