Meet Canadian cook Anna Sneddon in her secret garden

Blooming with flowers, fruits and vegetables, all Anna's inspiration comes from the earth...

Where do you live and where is this gorgeous garden of yours?

I live on the Sunshine Coast, BC, Canada.  It’s a 40 minute ferry ride from West Vancouver.  My garden is located on a 40 acre piece of land that my grandparents bought over 80 years ago.  My mom & aunt inherited it, and they let me live and have a garden here. It’s pretty special to me.  Right beside the forest, my neighbours all have big farms… its a beautiful area.
How did you fall in love with food and the organic, natural way of life?

Growing up my mom was always trying to feed our family what she thought were the healthiest foods, so brown rice instead of white, whole wheat bread (never white), whole wheat pasta, lots of vegetables, minimal salt, etc.  I hated it, all I wanted to eat was candy!  But the “eat healthy” mindset stuck with me when I moved out at 18 and I seeked out organic foods, and whatnot.  I lived in the city, Vancouver, for 5 years, and then I moved back home to the Sunshine Coast… I became interested in natural, organic skincare and wanted to grow my own ingredients (calendula, chamomile, comfy, borage, etc) but also planted vegetables and herbs as well, because I had the space.  Then I realised I really loved growing things I could eat… and the vegetable, fruit, herb, & berry garden has been growing ever since!  It’s very rewarding and I gained an appreciation for the land and where food comes from and the way the ecosystem works that I never had before.  That’s me making a LONG story short 😉

What’s next for Eat to Thrive?

I honestly don’t know!  I see so many accounts similar to mine (pretty photos of healthy, yummy vegan food) popping up, and they’re all pretty amazing, so I think I might focus more on gardening photos next summer.  We’ll see.  I’ve already posted every possible fruit platter or salad combination I can think of, so to me sometimes the things I post feel redundant.  “I already took this photo a year or two ago…”

I’ve also thought about perhaps self publishing a free e-book with all my photos and recipes.  I’d love to start filming Youtube videos with quick, easy gardening tips.  That’s been an idea I’ve had for a while.

  1. I’m impressed, I must say. Actually not often do I encounter a blog that’s both educative and entertaining, and let me tell you, you’ve gotten hit the nail on the head. Your concept is outstanding; the problem is one thing that not enough people are talking intelligently about. I’m very glad that I stumbled across this in my seek for something relating to this.
